Hope everyone is making the best of their quarantine. As the news gets scarier, we want to make sure at home that the kids are safe and also understanding whats going on. One thing that I feel helps make children feel secure is the following of a routine. In my classroom, everyday the children follow the same schedule, beginning from the minute they walk in to the minute they go home, the children are provided a basic day to day that is easy for them to follow.

Now at home I'm not every minute of their day needs to be a scheduled task but there are moments that you can place a routine that would make life a bit easier and stable for your young one. Right now the children may feel like they are on vacation from school, so they may not want to wake up early, or have meals at certain times. A big issue I hear from parents is bed time. So in the event when they are ready to return to school you wont have any issues getting them back into the routine they had before.

The following is an example routine suggested by the NYC DOE:

Morning Wake up routine

Breakfast

Reading time

Play

Afternoon Lunch

Quiet time

Music and movement

Play

Evening Dinner

A walk outside

Bedtime routine

Now I'm not saying you have the follow this, you guys can come up with a schedule that works for your household, just keep in mind that it should simple for a child to follow. You can work as a team and make a chart with pictures, that they themselves can refer to throughout the day.

Routines are a great way to promote positive behavior and make life a home a bit easier during these rough times. If you would like more information on routines or share how routines have helped your child during these please feel free to share in the comment section below.
